hi there- we had a fire next door to our studio a few weeks ago- fortunately no one was seriously injured- we came close to losing a lot of stuff, but did not. just made me realize how important insurance is, but also that nothing is truly insurance against fire. it's a really powerful force.
there are a lot of fires here in sf due to old electrical systems- it's just kind of a fact of life. a really wise person told me to keep backups for everything in multiple places, and, if you can, a remote, secure server. hard drives are pretty cheap, and actually i felt pretty cool buying a terabyte of memory that is the size of a book. not so long ago that was the size of a room.
the good thing that came out of the fire was that we needed to re-do our studio and clear out some of the accumulated scraps from past shows. we found a ton of sketches and process work, which is really easy to forget about, but in retrospect, it's really interesting to think about how the little pieces add up to something much bigger, in the end.
it was fun to reorganize and refresh. i believe in a fun but beautiful place to work, where it's ok if things get messy and everything is at easy reach for making stuff with.

so ferris and i got to work and put new canvas down on the floor, recovered the long art table, and replaced the couch with a really cool one given to us by friends.

here is me on the old couch!

finished up a commission as we were cleaning house....

which reminds me- the holidays are coming up! if you need a painting for someone you love or just for you, let me know. i'll only be accepting a couple commissions this year, as the denver show will take up most of my time from here out.
