so it's eerie looking over jean paul gaultier's couture collection.... all the models dressed as saints from many cultures, the dresses made using techniques that are generally reserved for altars. it's interesting what zeitgeists and common consciousness bring out all at once. here's a neat one:

i went nuts this morning. absolutely bonkers. can i just say...... john galliano IS A GENIUS. the new images for his couture line for dior were up this morning and anyone within earshot or cell range was requested to stop whatever they were doing at the moment and look HERE. i have not felt so ecstatic as i did this morning in a long time.
basically, couture is the most amazing exclusive form of fashion ever (to the uninitiated or unimaginative, probably crazy....)
there are artisans and craftspeople that are a dying breed that make these pieces of thing that might be worn just one for really rich people who go to paris, get muslin comps made, and refitted within the week (meaning you stay in paris for a little bit white you get fit for your 120,000 dollar gown.). here is my favorite excerpt- the pattern on the skirt is actually created from white sequins with black glass seed beads embroidered on silk. never mind the color... whew.

so, then your gown arrives in a big crate (if it's a big gown- there are some in this collection that would need that, which is utterly delightful) at your house. and, as i understand it, two ladies in one major metropolitan area will not be allowed by some houses to have the same dress. i just want to touch one. and this, dear reader, is galliano's best collection in years. brilliant. bravo. thank you.
i will just add, that in my wildest dreams, i'd be making paintings for john galliano. just puttin it out there.
people have been asking what my inspirations are. this would be up there- i try to replicate the feel i get from this piece with each one of my paintings, but in my own little way. that this inanimate lady, suspended in time, is sitting there, caring for you and looking out for you. all the time.
this is the artwork that hung over my bed when i was small.
this piece is by alphonse mucha, who was czech, but worked in paris as in illustrator/lithographer for the metro posters and advertisements of the time. he made a window in the amazing St. Vitus cathedral in prague, where his museum also resides. I wish there were good pictures of the stained glass, but it does not seem to be that way.
later, i painted to bring things nearer to me that were far away, when i moved to college here in sanfrancisco, i painted my sister and i together in this need for us to be close. i would say that would be the second biggest point of departure. i'll have to find that piece and post it. it's around.
I was in Eugene Oregon for my cousin's wedding over the weekend. Congrats to Brett & Kim! Eugene is home of the University of Oregon Ducks, and my family happens to be Oregon Stste University Beaver fans, both parents and little sister and brother in law being alums. OSU is located in nearby Corvallis. The following table drawing ensued, and was left at the restaurant.
Why oregon has the lamest fierce animal mascots ever, I don't know. I mean, I am sure a beaver can be fierce as can a duck..... but really....
